The theme of the World Tourism day this year is Tourism and Biodiversity.This theme will provide a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth.
About UNWTO Consulting Unit
In January 2010, UNWTO established, with support of the Federal Republic of Germany, the “Consulting Unit on Tourism and Biodiversity” at the UN premises in Bonn, Germany. Its task is to provide consulting services to UNWTO Member States on request on issues of biodiversity-based tourism, of participatory tourism planning and of linking biodiversity policy issues in general with sustainable tourism.
The Consulting Unit builds on the outcomes and lessons learnt of the successful projects implemented by the former UNWTO “Consulting Unit for Tourism and Biodiversity in Tsunami affected Countries” in cooperation with the Indonesian and Thai tourism Ministries.
It is imbedded into UNWTO´s programmatic activities in the field of tourism and biodiversity which, among others, consist of cooperating with the Convention on Biological Diversity, dedicating the World Tourism Day 2010 to the theme of biodiversity and of technical cooperation, also through the ST-EP programme.
